Family Photo – Chipperfield Photography

02 Mar

A couple of years ago our family was featured in a yearly YMCA magazine.  We’d been lucky enough to visit Camp Cheif Hector three years running. Cheif Hector is a YMCA camp run in the rockies, who offers a family camp twice a year.  It’s a wonderful bonding experience for the family where you get to spend an entire week together sans electronics, and doing campy stuff like horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, and lots of arts and crafts.  My favorite part of it though is that they feed your family three, healthy meals a day that you don’t have to worry about!  But I digress…

Thanks to the feature story we were called by Jennifer Chipperfield to set up a photo shoot for the magazine.  I was a little confused when she told us to meet her at a provincial park.  I was of course envisioning a little studio, with the scenery backdrops, ha!  Little did I know that her mind was already three steps ahead of mine, and she was thinking up some fabulous shots.  So we get there, and it’s freezing, but me being a mom, I desperately wanted a grand photo of the family that I could later purchase for our home.  So we decided, on mom’s orders, that we were going to make it happen anyhow.

When I first met Jennifer she was standing in the middle of a field, in freezing cold of a Calgary winter with her camera equipment, and a ladder.  Huh?  Yup a ladder.  She’s a warm, and funny lady who made us feel relaxed despite the chill, immediately.  Thankfully for us, she already had everything planned out, had her backdrops chosen and her vision of these amazingly retro pics were shot in a matter of about 15 minutes!  I was thouroughly impressed by her professionalism, and everyone was quite thankful to get it over with so we could get out of the cold.

About a week later we met up to go over the pictures, and I was completely blown away.  The pics she took were in a word, amazing.  Not only were they amazing, but a few of the shots I picked out had one of more of us with eyes closed, or head turned etc.  I mean how often do you get a pefect picture of five people?  With Jennifer though this isn’t an issue, she can take your favorite shot, and using digital photo techniques to replace the subject from a different shot so you get your perfect family photo.

Jennifer has been kind enough to allow me to use one of the pictures from that day on my blog.  If you’re as impressed as I am, head over to her blog to see her other work.  Check out all the digital photo enhancements.  One day I will know 1/8th of what she does!  If you’re in the Calgary area and looking for a unique family, or otherwise, portrait give Jennifer a call!

What a beautiful family! You guys don’t look at all cold, but warm and happy. I like how she took the picture from above, it’s the most flattering view.

Thanks so much for your kind words Natoma – it’s amazing how they took me back to that day. Your family was lovely to work with and that makes all the difference!
